Radisys Introduces Integrated Mobile Media Server

New Service Delivery System Enhances Mobile Service Providers' Ability to Grow 3G and 4G/LTE Service Revenues Beyond Flat-Rate Data Plans

HILLSBORO, Ore. --(Business Wire)-- Feb 08, 2010 Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a leading global provider of application-ready software and hardware platforms, today announced the Integrated Mobile Media Server (IMMS), enhancing Mobile Service Providers’ ability to grow new revenues from the explosion of 3G mobile video services and emerging 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) deployments. IMMS is a packet-based service delivery system that offers scale economies to enhance Mobile Service Providers’ ability to generate profitable mobile service revenues beyond flat-rate data plans. The IMMS delivers two-way and N-way conversational video services, while also enhancing one-way streaming services, thereby shifting the point of service monetization back into the Mobile Service Providers’ domain. In addition, by consolidating disparate service processing equipment into a single, cost-efficient carrier-class network element, the IMMS will reduce the overall costs for mass-market deployment of 3G and 4G/LTE mobile services.

“With the explosion in data traffic over 3G networks, in particular one-way streaming content originating from the Internet, Mobile Service Providers are increasingly relegated to the role of mobile broadband access providers between devices and Internet-based content providers,” said Godfrey Chua, Research Manager, Wireless and Mobile Infrastructure, IDC. “Radisys’ IMMS holds the promise of helping Mobile Service Providers enhance their business models by enabling them to sell additional differentiated services, such as video ringback tones, multimedia conferencing, or video advertising, over and above flat-rate mobile data plan revenues. As the mobile network continues to move towards data-based applications and services, these efforts will be key for Mobile Service Providers wanting to remain relevant to their customers.”

The IMMS provides an optimized video delivery solution across diverse networks, varying mobile device capabilities and diversity of content, all while conserving available bandwidth. IMMS builds on the many IP-based audio and video mixing, recording and media playback features already available on Radisys’ industry-leading Convedia® Media Servers for mobile networks. The IMMS also introduces two new features: integrated 3G-324M support and EVRC audio codec support for CDMA-2000 and EVDO networks. The addition of 3G-324M enables IMMS to support both circuit-based and packet-based 3G mobile video services on the same platform. Radisys also recently added video text overlay and RTSP client support to its Convedia Media Server family, resulting in a feature-rich services delivery system for Mobile Service Providers and their application developers. As the market for 3G mobile services continues to grow and as 4G networks deploy, Radisys will evolve the IMMS architecture to include powerful new capabilities available on Radisys’ award-winning Promentum® ATCA platforms.

Radisys’ implementation of 3G-324M support overcomes the obstacles of expensive 3G-324M video gateway solutions that are up to 10x the cost of traditional VoIP voice gateways. IMMS essentially eliminates the need for 3G-324M video gateways, and terminates 3G-324M video circuits using Telecom Equipment Manufacturers’ (TEMs) existing VoIP voice gateway products. Additionally, the solution transfers the 324M protocol processing inside the media server, consolidating network elements and simplifying network management. By reducing the number of network elements in the call path, the IMMS also improves video quality while reducing call path delay. IMMS with integrated 3G-324M support, operating in conjunction with TEMS’ voice media gateways, eliminates complexity and cost, resulting in a greater than 50% cost savings compared to stand-alone 3G-324M video gateway products. The result is a cost-efficient 3G services architecture for conversational mobile audio/video services, enabling TEMs to offer an improved, cost-efficient architecture to Mobile Service Providers for mass-market deployment.

“As the global leader in delivering IP media processing solutions and application-ready ATCA platforms for five years running, Radisys is ideally suited to provide integrated solution offerings that accelerate Mobile Service Providers’ ability to generate new, differentiated revenues,” said Anthony Ambrose, Vice President and General Manager, Communications Networks, Radisys. “The IMMS is a natural extension of Radisys’ leadership in media servers and telecom platforms. By working closely with our industry-leading partners and with our tier-one customers on early deployments, Radisys is shifting the playing field for Mobile Service Providers, and positioning them to capture a bigger share of the growing mobile services market.”
