Upcoming AdvancedTCA Base Extensions specification benefits current and future systems - including for cloud
The AdvancedTCA (ATCA) Base Extensions (PICMG 3.7) specification supports larger systems with the horsepower to handle deployment in cloud and datacenter applications, while also emphasizing compatibility with original AdvancedTCA (PICMG 3.0) platforms and boards. In addition to extended blade and shelf area, PICMG 3.7 includes enhanced Hardware Platform Management (HPM) capabilities, such as a complete description of the system power geography, much of which can be integrated into existing ATCA systems.

The Hardware Platform Interface: A proven abstraction layer for xTCA management
The Hardware Platform Interface (HPI) is one of two sets of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that the Service Availability Forum (SAF) set out to define in 2001, as the move for communications systems to open modular platforms began in earnest (another sign of that move was the launch that same year of the AdvancedTCA (ATCA) initiative within the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG)). A key goal for HPI (and its complementary layer, SAF's Application Interface Specification (AIS)), is to enable the development of "carrier-grade" software application suites that are hardware independent but still capable of delivering the high service availability of previous top-to-bottom proprietary and purpose-built communications systems.

COTS management building blocks for AdvancedTCA: Proven over the first decade
Over the past decade, the platform management layer of xTCA systems has proven itself a challenging necessity. Mark Overgaard of Pigeon Point Systems reviews various aspects and implementations of COTS managers, and offers a forecast for the ecosystem's hardware platform management layer.
