CompactPCI aims for high reliability applications

CompactPCI AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA Systems — January 13, 1999

The growth of CompactPCI usage has been forecast to be over 100% per year over the next few years, to a point where it will become a leading technology in the embedded computing market. One application area where CompactPCI has been especially well accepted is in telecommunications, where reliability, serviceability, mean time between failures, and mean time to repair are vital concerns. A major factor spurring the acceptance of CompactPCI in the telecom industry has been the addition of hot swapping capability to the CompactPCI standard. In this article Eran discusses PCI SIG’s Hot-Plug Specification (which was developed to support live extraction and insertion has been used by the PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturing Group (PICMG) as the basis for their own CompactPCI hot swap specification.
